New Build Extension Earth Retaining Wall Case Study

Project Details:

Dry Waterproofing Ltd successfully won the tender to carry out the waterproofing works recommended by John Newton & Company. Dry Waterproofing worked under contract to the main contractor Elsworth & Bond Ltd who was carrying out the new build extension and refurbishing works including an earth retaining boundary wall that needed to be waterproofed.

Methodology

The waterproofing products recommended by John Newton and Co on this project were a combination of Newton 508 and Newton 101F.

Newton 508 is an 8mm studded cavity membrane that was fitted to the new earth retaining boundary wall and corresponding floor slab. Newton 101F, a cementitious (tanking) slurry, which was to be used in conjunction with a brick up-stand to create a ‘bund’ so that any ground water ingress from the retaining wall would be contained and controlled to one specific area. This was achieved by mechanically fixing the Newton 508 cavity drain membrane to the retaining wall with the Newton MultiPlug using the ‘curtain wall hanging’ method.

The Newton perimeter drainage channel, incorporating jetting ports was fitted in front of the membrane at the base of the retaining wall and bund walls. This created a void form to remove groundwater to a pre-installed drainage gully outlet connected to a designated water collection chamber. The concrete floor was overlaid with close cell floor insulation and Newton 508 membrane. This was then sealed to thewall membrane and bund up-stand to complete the works. The room was now ready for our client to apply floor screed and construct the block wall in front of the wall membrane.

Result

The Newton Membrane system allowed our client to create a high spec bathroom, W.C and utility room very quickly after our waterproofing work and without fear of compromising the waterproofing system.

Benefit

The structural waterproofing was completed without any need to prepare the substrate with no wet trades or drying out times; meaning minimal disruption and a highly cost effective waterproofing solution, also the property owners benefited from a long term guarantee.
