Dry Waterproofing Ltd were commissioned by the client to provide a robust and guaranteed structural waterproofing system for this Victorian cellar. This cellar was to be transformed into a usable damp-free storage facility and was situated below the entrance path/pavement at the front of the property. The cellar had previously been waterproofed by another company incorrectly. Therefore a sympathetic and economical approach to waterproofing this below ground structure needed to be specified due to a limited budget available. Dry Waterproofing Ltd waterproofed this cellar using the Newton System 500 Cavity Drain Membrane System in accordance with BS8102:2009 the code of practice for the protection of below ground structures against water from the ground.
Newton 508 (8mm studded) Cavity Drain Membrane was mechanically fixed to the thick York Stone flat and sloping ceiling, as well as the walls. The Newton MultiPlug has a self-tapping hole in the center of the plug, which provides a fixing point for timber battens to be screw fixed to the plugs. Once the timber battens were screw fixed into the heads of the MultiPlugs, insulation and plasterboard was fixed to the battens and the plasterboard was finished with a setting coat plaster. This was now ready for decoration.
A 100mm x 80mm deep channel was cut out of the floor around the perimeter of walls and the Newton BaseDrain pre-formed drainage conduit was installed within the recess. 50mm thick close cell insulation was then laid over the floor and mechanically screw fixed down. Then Newton 508 cavity drain membrane was laid on top. The floor membrane was overlaid with 22mm thick flooring grade T&G chipboard.
The Newton Titan-Pro White sump pump system was also installed, which consisted of a preformed sump liner, two submersible pumps, a battery back-up facility and a pumps control panel with a high water level alarm.
Result & Benefit:
The cellar was made dry for storage usage very quickly without the need for extensive drying out times as is the case with cementitious tanking systems. This allowed the client to fix shelving units and humidity control extract fan to the battens system without compromising the waterproofing. The client also benefits from long term meaningful guarantees, which can be insurance backed
